Resident A Male, aged 18 YMCA Harbour House

Our resident A became homeless after a breakdown with his family and began ‘sofa surfing’ with friends. Due to his circumstances he felt he had missed out on education and training. He moved into YMCA Harbour House, where YMCA Housing staff supported him to enrol on a college course. He has now completed the course and has achieved accredited qualifications.

“Whilst staying at the YMCA, I was offered the opportunity to go on a college course through the Supported Housing Scheme. I met new friends and whilst on the course I gained more life skills such as job searching, writing CVs, health and safety and basic hygiene. I feel this will help me find employment and more importantly has given me the confidence to find employment. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the staff at the YMCA”

Resident B Male, aged 20 YMCA Foyer

Our resident B moved into the YMCA Foyer and on to the Supported Housing Scheme following an unsuccessful private tenancy. He had struggled to manage and understand finances which resulted in large arrears with rent and other bills. Since entering the scheme, resident B has worked with our staff on budgeting and money management, resulting in his money going further.

“The YMCA Supported Housing staff supported me and offered me the chance to go on a money management course so I could manage my finances better. As a result, I can now make my money go further. I even received vouchers for attending. I am planning to take more educational courses in the future as a result of my experience and support.”

Resident C Female, aged 20 YMCA Harbour House

Our resident C moved into YMCA Harbour House and onto the Supported Housing Scheme following a marital breakdown within the family resulting in conflict at home.

“I am 20 years old and moved into the YMCA in January because of a breakdown in my family life at home where I ended up ‘sofa surfing’ for a while. I applied to the YMCA Supported Housing Scheme and felt that they were very supportive and speedy in helping me with my application. Moving into the YMCA has benefited my mental health because I am now in a more stable environment.”
